Wix free website builder: what the free plan really gives you, and the one thing it does not
Wix's free plan is genuinely free and it is not a trial. It costs $0, needs no credit card and includes reliable hosting, the drag-and-drop editor, the no-code design features and the full template library. You can build and publish a complete site without paying anything.
The one thing it does not give you is your own web address. A free Wix site lives at username.wixsite.com/sitename. Wix says so on their own page, describing a paid upgrade as replacing that free Wix URL with a custom domain. So the free plan is fine for learning, for a portfolio you share by link, or for testing an idea. It is not fine for a business that needs to print an address on a card.
The paid ladder, cheapest first: Light at about $17 a month gives 2 GB storage and 2 collaborators. Core at about $29 adds 50 GB, basic eCommerce and scheduling, and 5 collaborators. Business at about $39 is the recommended tier with 100 GB, standard eCommerce and 10 collaborators. Business Elite at about $159 has unlimited storage, the advanced developer platform and 100 collaborators. Every paid plan includes a free domain for the first year and a 14-day money-back guarantee.
So the real question is not free versus paid, it is Light versus Core. If you only need a brochure site with your own domain, Light does it. The moment you want to take a payment or let clients book a slot, you are on Core.
